Planning and passion. Not two words most people would put together, right?
When we think about it passion it’s unconstrained, spontaneous, uncontrollable.
And planning… it can often feel the opposite – like a big, overwhelming list of chores.
Well yes, and no.
We all have big dreams and goals. But how many of them are you achieving? Have you written them down? Made a dream board or a bucket list? Or do you keep them stored in your mind as a ‘one day dream’ destined to stay in tomorrowland forever?
For some of us, knowing what those big dreams and goals are can be the hardest part, then taking ownership of them as something you seriously want comes next. That takes commitment if you really want to achieve them.
But even if you ARE writing them down, sending letters to the Universe (or Santa) and gazing intently at your dreamboard every morning – you still have to take action for your goals to become real.
To quote my dearly departed cockney grandma…
“Spit in one hand, wish in the other and see which fills first.”
(Smart lady, my grandma. She also made the best roast dins with homemade apple pie for dessert every single Sunday when I was a kid. Yum!)
It’s all about the action
You can stick as MANY pictures up as you like and daydream all day long but unless you get on with the doing, you ain’t ever gonna get there. This is where the planning comes in.
The key with planning for these big dreams is the breaking down. You’ve got the BIG picture ideas, but what about the small steps and actions it takes to make that big picture happen?
Making plans is something which comes naturally to me, and it’s what I love helping my clients achieve. But when it comes to my own big dreams, even I need a bit of help and structure to this or I can lose my way in the maze of shiny distractions.
Here’s what I use
Enter the Passion Planner.
I bought my first Passion Planner two years ago. bought my first Passion Planner 2 years ago. The moment I ripped open the envelope, felt it’s weight in my eager hands, and flipped through the clean pages I was in LOVE. For me it hit just the right note of professional looking, and supremely well organised with a sprinkle of magic woowoo dustt. (You can buy yours here)
It’s so much more than just a planner. Yes you can use it for your appointments and scheduling but I can do that on my Google Calendar. Passion Planner helps you to break down your short and long term goals and incorporate them into your daily life so that step by step they get DONE.
It combines the 2 things which I am passionate about: determining your personal vision for success, THEN building your life around that. Boom.
Here’s how it works:
YYou make your wishlist, broken down by timescale. This is the time to open up and dispense with the what ifs. If time / money / etc was no object, what would you have or do or be if it could be ANYTHING?
Once you have this you’re lead through prioritising the four main goals, breaking them down to create specifics and giving them a date. I’ve said it before but planning out your tasks and scheduling time for them is a MUST.
So Dream Big, Break it Down, Work at it and repeat! Tweet that
When I work with my clients one of the key things we focus on at the beginning is what success looks like to them. Success to you may look totally different to my version. And that’s ok – it’s more than ok it’s what makes each and every one of us unique and special.
Reasons I love this planner so much:
- It helps you to get clear on YOUR dreams, not what someone else thinks you should be doing, not even what YOU may think you ought to do.
- Throughout the planner there are inspirational quotes and challenges to go with them – like this one: An expert is someone who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field – Niels Bohr, Danish Physicist and Nobel Prize winnerTask: This week find a mentor or someone who has already accomplished what you want to do.
Well, I couldn’t have put it better myself!
- Monthly focus page every month. Get clear on what you need to do and why.
- And then use the monthly reflections. It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day but you’ll find that the really successful people will take time out to reflect on what has gone well and not so well and make the tweaks and changes in response that.
- It reminds you to track the GOOD things, because all too often we focus on only the bad.
I won’t lie, I know not everyone loves planning like I do BUT you don’t need to have a rigid, set in stone agenda. Be as flexible as you need – the key thing I would love you to take away from this is to get clear on your big dreams and goals and then break them down into actionable steps.
What’s great about the Passion Planner is because it’s also your weekly planner and schedule for tasks and appointments, you are using it daily – you can’t ignore it. Which means that accountability is built in. Smart hey?
